Fraud has a wide range of implications. In 2021, the US alone had 847,376 Internet fraud complaints lodged, with total losses reaching $6.9 billion, as reported by the FBI. Learn more about fraud – how to identify it and how to prevent yourself from falling prey on the internet.

What is internet fraud?

Internet fraud makes use of the Internet to commit cybercrime fraud

Thi includes ransomware, viruses, unauthorised access to your computer, and hacking into your account to gain personal information such as your credit card details or identity numbers. With these details, scammers could possibly make purchases or transfer money out of your account.

The consequences of Internet Fraud

There have been several incidents that targeted large banks in particular. In March 2020, over 200,000 credit card details were published online from top banks in Southeast Asia, including Singapore.

How to identify fraud?

Consider this, you receive a message that someone made an unathorised transaction from your bank account. Or, you get a payment confirmation for a purchase you never made, but the money’s already transferred out of your bank account.

Initially, you don’t know what happened, but then realised that there was a text message from an unknown number asking you to confirm your bank account details. Or maybe you signed up for an account on a suspicious website and entered your personal information.

While it’s hard to prevent scams completely, you can take steps to identify them and protect yourself.

First, never answer texts, emails, or calls from unknown numbers asking you to update your credit card information and passwords. Scammers often use urgent language to try to instill panic and get you to reveal personal information.

E-commerce websites are designed to look professional and legitimate, but never give them your information. Check social media reviews if anyone has ordered from them and ensure it’s a well-known brand.

Ensure you are alerted of any bank transactions and track your transactions to ensure there’s no suspicious activity. And finally, refrain from making online purchases on public Wi-Fi because such an unsecured connection can allow hackers to steal your information or inject your hardware with malware.
